When Integrity Fades, Your Leadership Disappears!

As leaders, if we do not stay extremely diligent, our integrity can “fade”! Recently I was reading article in the Chronicle of Higher Education regarding corrupt practices in college admissions. A doctoral student by the name of Nathan Harris who is studying at the University of Michigan described the phenomenon and reasons for this as “ethics fade”. This got me thinking out loud about how very successful leaders can at some point find themselves embroiled in controversy due to their misconduct.

Harris’s research asserts that ethical failings are created and sustained based upon a variety of internal factors such as a misdirected desire to please, self-deception, and rationalizations. External factors also play a role including environmental press, lower revenues (or the desire to create much higher ones quickly!), and competition or other market forces. All of this combined impacts the individual simultaneously and starts to wear down their moral standards.

Accordingly, most of the time when we fail as leaders with integrity, it is not due to some sudden event. Rather it is due to a slow but steady erosion of our ethical principles or “fade”. The point being all this requires is for leaders to become complacent. A little compromise here or a short cut there begins to start us in ethical free fall. Sadly the eventual result will be losing all credibility as a leader. In fact, your leadership will dissipate to the point that it is no longer exists among your team and colleagues. You can no longer be trusted, your words and actions are at odds with each other, and best intentions come up empty. So what should we do?
  • Stay diligent in identifying and acting on our values
  • Question the questionable decision or request
  • Know your non-negotiables with the work, home, social, and spiritual parts of our lives
  • Speak up when you believe that your organization is heading down the wrong path
  • Be prepared to make a change if the organization or its leaders will not change

Now all of this is much easier said than done but what is more important to you? Candidly, I have left positions in my career due to these very issues. It was inconvenient and challenging but I had decided what was more important to me. It was more important that I stood in integrity among others even when it was unpopular to do so.

Make sure you are LIVING a legacy versus just waiting to LEAVE one!

Make sure you are LIVING a legacy versus just waiting to LEAVE one!

This weekend I had the privilege of connecting with some old college friends and classmates. In catching up on each other's lives I was struck by how much impact they were making in the lives of others. To a person they were making a difference. They were special needs educators, entrepreneurs, health professionals, career counselors, etc. and all satisfied in their careers. Along the way, they have raised great kids, overcome personal challenges, and never flinched from what life gave them. Come to think about it. The same is true for friends from high school and beyond. I seem to find myself in great company!

This got me thinking out loud about how we live and lead our lives NOW impacts what we leave eventually leave behind. You see these people are not waiting to leave a legacy. As leadership expert and author John Maxwell asserts, they are living their legacies the moment the morning alarm sounds!

To me living a legacy requires us to make some commitments.
  • It requires us to commit to selflessness.
  • It requires us to commit to being resilient.
  • It requires us to commit to endeavors and people that matter most.
  • It requires us to commit to think about ourselves less.
  • It requires us to commit to leading out loud!
Such commitments will have a cost, but I assure you it will be worth it. So what legacy are you living? Who are you impacting? Are you able to do what matters to you? What do you want your legacy to eventually be?  I have a strong feeling you are living more of a legacy than you think! I have a feeling your footprints have been light but your path strong and true!

As always, if I can help you Get Better, Be Ready and LEAD OUT LOUD, I would love to hear from you. Also, as a bonus, if you go to my Out Loud Strategies website (www.outloudinc.com) and enter your contact information, I will send you a FREE guide to establishing a mentoring initiative program in your organization! Are you Follower Focused or just Follower Friendly?

Are you Follower Focused or just Follower Friendly?

So here is a question for you to think out loud about. Are you Are you Follower Focused or just Follower Friendly? So your question right back to me may be, “What’s the difference and why does it matter?”

As it relates to the second half of your question, I have highlighted in previous blogs the disturbing statistics on employee disengagement. Unengaged (or actively disengaged!) employees, volunteers, team members, etc. equals lower productivity, effort, and customer satisfaction. This leads to lower profits, diminished income, fewer people served, etc. THAT is WHY this matters!

In terms of the first part of the question, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE! Here are some of them below:

Follower Friendly Leaders –
Like or Tolerate followers
Desire a Congenial work environment
Are vested just enough
Care about Contributions
Help their team
Manage and Supervise
Have Transactional relationships

Follower Focused Leaders –
Care deeply for followers
Desire a Growth Oriented environment
Are vested completely
Care about Continued Success
Sacrifice for their team
Lead and Mentor
Have Transformational relationships

You see, the difference is a mindset that desires for the people around you to develop and succeed. I have often told my team members that I consider part of my job is getting ready for their next one! Leading in a Follower Focused manner does not allow for just working along the edges. It requires you to lead deeply, completely, passionately, and actively!

Here are some tips that can help you get you started:
  • Conversations about future plans, current values, suggestions for improvement
  • Mentoring or coaching
  • Providing skill-building experiences
  • Recognizing contributions
  • Sharing your “why”
  • Discover what is important to them

As always, if I can help you Get Better, Be Ready and LEAD OUT LOUD, I would love to hear from you. Also, as a bonus, if you go to my Out Loud Strategies website (www.outloudinc.com) and enter your contact information, I will send you a FREE guide to establishing a mentoring initiative program in your organization!
